The New England Sociological Association (NESA) is pleased announce the Fall 2009 Conference “Innovative Approaches to Teaching: Sharing Best Practices” will be held at Northeastern University in Boston, MA on Saturday November 7, 2009 from 9AM - 4PM.

FALL 2009 CALL FOR PAPERS
Proposal Deadline: October 1, 2009
How do you convey challenging sociological concepts? Have you come across a new way to present an old theory? What activity or method best engages students with different learning styles? Share your experiences and learn innovative approaches and best practices from others! We welcome you to propose papers, workshops, speaker panels, and poster presentations in these and other areas: 

 

  • Teaching in the Classroom
  • Best Uses of Technology
  • Creatively Engaging Students
  • New Ways to Present Core Ideas
  • Experiential Learning
  • Creating Dialogue
  • Teaching to Various Learning Styles
  • The Student Experience: What Works?
  • Engaging the Community in the Learning Experience

You may identify additional variations on these themes.  Undergraduate students are welcome to present posters or to co-present with sponsors.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER
 Jack Levin

JACK LEVIN, Ph.D. is the Brudnick Professor of Sociology and Criminology at Northeastern University in Boston, where he co-directs its Center on Violence and Conflict and teaches courses in the sociology of violence and hate.
He has authored or co-authored 30 books, including Mass Murder: America’ s Growing Menace, Why We Hate, The Functions of Prejudice, Hate Crimes Revisited, The Will to Kill: Making Sense of Senseless Murder, Domestic Terrorism, Serial Killers and Sadistic Murderers—Up Close and Personal, and The Violence of Hate.
Dr. Levin has published more than 150 articles in professional journals and newspapers, such as The New York Times, Boston Globe, Dallas Morning News, Philadelphia Inquirer, Christian Science Monitor, Chicago Tribune, Washington Post,  and USA Today.
He appears frequently on national television programs, including 48 Hours, 20/20, Dateline NBC, The Today Show, Good Morning America, Oprah, The O’Reilly Factor, Larry King Live, and all network newscasts.
Dr. Levin was honored by the Massachusetts Council for Advancement and Support of Education as its “Professor of the Year.” He has spoken to a wide variety of community, academic, and professional groups, including the White House Conference on Hate Crimes, the Department of Justice, the Department of Education, OSCE’s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (a membership of 59 countries) and the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

Avoid the on-site registration fee of $5 by registering early! To register for the 2009 Fall Conference, please complete and mail (or email) the 2009 Fall Conference Registration Form to dobruck.j@neu.edu. Conference fees can be paid in check if mailing your registration OR via cash, check or money order on site on the day of the conference.
